FERCAM FINE ART: Sustainable logistics for the 60th International Art Exhibition - Venice Biennale
[Bolzano, April 23, 2024] - Sustainable logistics for the 60th edition of the Venice Biennale, themed "Stranieri Ovunque - Foreigners Everywhere," bears the signature of FERCAM, a South Tyrolean logistics and transport company specialized in the transport and handling of artworks.
In line with the sustainability projects proposed by the Biennale, FERCAM has won the contract for local transport of artworks displayed at the 60th International Art Exhibition, originating from EU and non-EU countries. This award, made in consortium with Scalo Fluviale based in Venice, is a testament to FERCAM's commitment to environmental protection and emissions reduction, furthering the Biennale's goal of carbon neutrality and promoting a more sustainable model for the design, setup, and execution of all its events.
FERCAM has managed all phases of the art transfers that, from April 20 to November 24, 2024, can be seen across the Giardini and the Arsenale in Venice. The preparation for the exhibition began several months prior to its official opening on April 20.
Beyond local transport in Italy, FERCAM Fine Art also handled customs and fine arts operations where required, related to the import and subsequent export of approximately 800 works and installations, as well as the retrieval, storage, and redistribution of packaging in dedicated spaces.
At the conclusion of the Biennale on November 24, 2024, FERCAM will return all artworks to their regular exhibition locations. Artworks of immense value have traversed continents for this event.
Artworks of immense value traverse the continents
The Venice Biennale 2024 features 87 National Participants across the historic pavilions in the Giardini, the Arsenale, and the historic city center. Four countries are participating for the first time: the Republic of Benin, Ethiopia, the Democratic Republic of Timor Leste, and the United Republic of Tanzania.
The artwork "Diego and I" (1949), a self-portrait by Frida Kahlo that also features her husband Diego Rivera, is exhibited for the first time at the Biennale and comes from Argentina, with FERCAM Fine Art specialists safeguarding its journey.
«Working with highly significant artworks and projects is always challenging. There can be unforeseen complications right up until the last moment, but these also bring great satisfaction. Working for the Biennale Arte 2024 fills us with pride,» said Francesca Bortoluzzi, Fine Art Specialist and head of the Biennale project for FERCAM.
SUSTAINABLE LOGISTICS – REUSE OF PACKAGING
Maximum attention has been given to the sustainability of logistics operations. Efforts extend beyond transporting and handling artworks with environmentally friendly vehicles to include energy efficiency and the reuse of custom packaging materials for transporting artworks. Additionally, the impact of logistics is reduced by optimizing routes, especially for wooden crates, which, once their primary purpose is served, are destined for reuse, thanks to an agreement with Echo Labs to create furniture from recycled wooden panels.
FERCAM's comprehensive organization and the breadth and depth of integrated services it offers—from air and road transport to customs operations and managing complex bureaucratic processes—have ensured timely delivery of all artworks on display
